You Can Find Anything if You Know Where to Look!

You really can find anything if you just know where to look.

You’ve got to love the internet for this right? I mean hasn’t it just opened up the whole planet in terms of the things you can find!?

Here’s one example. Homeschooling in this neck of the woods, isn’t very popular. I suppose that is because it isn’t even that well known around here. Most people wouldn’t even begin to know where to look for the right curricullums (curricula?) gosh, looks like I need to brush up on my Latin.

However, these days, especially in the USA, you can find everything you need (except maybe time, and in my case the patience) to homeschool your kids. Everything from fancy whiteboard/computer interfaces, to discount classroom furniture, to all the learning materials that a Type A personality could hope to find.

It’s heartening to know that in a time when our educational system is on it’s knees (hurray for the private school my kids are going to), to know that for ‘average joe’ there is an alternative to state school out there.

More people need to know about this.

Look to The Masters For Inspiration

One of my favourite websites at the moment, is Smashing Magazine. They are part techie, part designer, and just about everything they talk about I find absolutely fascinating, and very inspirational.

Today they did a post about the Bauhaus school of thought.

It took me RIGHT back to high school art class when I first studied the movement.

I felt the rush of excitement and pure pleasure at seeing some of the designs in front of me again. The image is clickable if you’d like to go and read it for yourself. They also talk about Kandinsky, Klee and a few other painters you may be familiar with if you’re an arto like myself.

It was a great reminder to me to always look to the masters when needing inspiration, refreshment and motivation. One should always seek advice and guidance from ‘those in the know’.

If you want to buy a new car, consult an expert, watch Top Gear, read a motoring magazine. If you want to lose weight, see a doctor, read a fat burner review or take a pill.

Consult those in the know.

It’s a good lesson.

File Extensions Part VII

Do you know what the File Extension MOFF is used for?   I didn’t until I did some digging to find out!

The File Extension MOFF is classified as the following:  Movie, Video, Multimedia File Type.

So where is this file type used? This picture motion browser file is found on Sony Camera Hard Drives. At this stage, I’m unable to find any information on formatting or converting MOFF file types, or how to open it, whilst not using the Motion Picture Browser on the camera itself.

Also available on the website above, is a utility called “Driver Cure”. It’s available for free download, and will update your outdated drivers automatically. A useful little tool.

What is This Software Used For? Adobe Illustrator.

I’m starting a new series of posts, talking about various graphics design software packages and what they’re primarily used for. This will help people starting out in the industry, or people enhancing their skill set, to improve their marketability in the current job climate.

Today I’m going to talk about Adobe Illustrator.

Adobe Illustrator is mostly used as a Vector drawing programme. If you’re not sure what Vectors and bitmaps are, then please see this post.

Although you can insert things like photographs, which are bitmaps, there is no opportunity to edit them, because that is not what this software is for.

This is the kind of programme you would use if you are wanting to create Photoshop brushes, or custom shapes, as they can be scaled (enlarged or reduced) without any loss of quality.

So if you are drawing a brand new custom logo for someone, this is the perfect programme to use for that, and it is fast becoming industry standard.

Graphic Design Course

Just a quick one to say that I am so loving my graphic design course right now.  My attention span has certainly matured (along with parts of my body that I wished had NOT matured quite so much), but it definitely shows you that there are HUGE advantages to being a mature age student, and that continuing education is WELL worth it.

When you know what interests you, and have the life experience to back it up, you understand WHAT YOU WANT TO DO with your life, and the course is simply the building block that allows you to get there.

This is why it’s SO important to take a gap year after high school unless you are 100% sure what you want to study.  Even then, if you aren’t sure and you go and find yourself hating what you’re studying – stop sooner than I did  – and go and get some life experience. You will learn pretty quickly about retail, and business if you are the one carrying the coffee tray, or lacing up the sale sneakers I guarantee you. There is always time to go back and get your qualification – and you will DO SO MUCH better with your grades if you understand WHY you’re studying what you are.

Online Education is Empowering

Free Pictures | acobox.comIsn’t the internet like the greatest thing ever?

Think of what it’s done for furthering your education. I signed up for a graphic design course, after checking out numerous institutions online.

I found the perfect course that I really want to do, has great payment plans, and voila, 10 days later, my first module has shipped and I’m officially a student again! Along with a real student card – which amongst other things (totally makes me feel 10 years younger) entitles me to whopping discounts on various professional software packages i.e. Adobe Creative Suite Premium CS4!!!!

With tools like this at our disposal in this day and age I really feel like it’s important to keep learning. There is always something new to learn. It keeps the mind fresh, and the spirit invigorated.

If any of you are interested in finding out which college I’ve chosen for my course, feel free to leave me a comment. Right now I’m going to go through the contents of the package, install my free student software, and get really excited about the future!
