File Extensions Part III

Do you have any idea what a .ged file is? Apparently it stands for File Extension GED, and can be explained as Genealogical Data Communcation. It’s commonly used in programmes which trace ancestry. I suppose that File Extension GED is mostly used in those family tree programmes that you can buy.

Have you traced your family tree? It’s a fascinating subject, one can discover all manner of things by researching it. I found a great television programme called “Who Do You Think You Are?” which traced the ancestry of celebrities, and they usually had several questions about their ancestry, that they wanted to find out the answers to, before setting out to discover their ancestry. For example, Jeremy Irons, wanted to know why he felt so at home in Ireland, when in fact he was English, and why he became the only actor in his family. It’s a fascinating subject and now you know the file extensions related to it to.

File Extensions Part IV

This is the final in my series of four posts about File Extensions PLS, as much as I love techie things, I’m a design girl at heart, and I have a massive workload staring me in the face positively itching to be tackled, so I’ll make this brief.

Have you ever heard of a .pls extension? It’s a file that contains play list information. It’s utitlized by many different programmes, but the most commonly known ones, which you will probably have heard of are Napster, WinAmp, Real MP3 and a couple of others. They basically store information required to play your favourite playlists which you’ve lovingly put together, and no doubt obsessed about for hours in the creation of ‘mix cd’s’ for your loved ones or crushes!

The File Extension PLS website also offers something called Driver Detective for Windows based computers will you can download totally free, and it will automatically scan and update your drivers for you. That sounds handy doesn’t it? I remember when I used to have a PC, that finding the latest drivers was a constant source of frustration for me, and with a tool like this it would really have made life a lot easier!

File Extensions Part II

Let’s talk about file extensions again, it turns out it’s a pretty interesting topic for me and there’s a ton of information out there that can be shared! Don’t you just love the internet?

File Extension WMV is a website that offers information about the Windows Media Player file format, as opposed to the Real Media Player or iTunes format. They also offer something called Driver Detective, totally free.

Driver detective will take approximately 10 seconds to download and will streamline the process of searching for and updating drivers.

The website, File Extention WMV is well worth checking out as it offers comprehensive information on several topics relating to file extensions and related information. It is well written, concise and to the point, and definitely worth the visit.

Getting Organised Can be Really Good Fun

What true techie, design geek or Apple fan would *not* like to shop for PDAs? I love them, I think they’re awesome, and they’re one of the things that I search for most when doing online shopping.

The possibilities are endless, and the idea of being organised and alerted to future meetings, appointments and tasks is seriously attractive! I mean after two kids, I’m lucky if I remember something as mundane as breakfast in the morning, matching socks I’m still working on, but getting a PDA would really solve a lot of those problems for me. I must admit, although I don’t have one *yet* I’m trying to use my ordinary cell phone (not an iPhone…SOB!) more comprehensively, so that I still get that organizational experience.

Oh well, you’ll be the first to hear about it when I do finally spring for one!

File Extensions Part I

Do you know most of the file extentions out there? I suppose I know quite a few, but there are always new ones cropping up. Often a simple google search won’t even turn up answers on the newer additions to the software marketplace.

I came across a website called File Extention PPT. Now as many of you know the PPT extension relates to Microsoft Powerpoint. This is the format you would use if you were working on a presentation, and it was a work in progress. The next time you load the file, it will open in powerpoint, in editing mode for you to continue. The website goes on to explain that if you were to save your document as a .pps then that would indicate to a user’s version of power point that it was a complete presentation, and would open the file in fullscreen mode, and begin to play the presentation without the need for the user to click ‘view’ and ‘view show’.

The File Extention PPT website is chock full of related information and is well worth checking out. For example, did you know that Open Office can also make use of these extentions? In the very same way as Power point? This is great news for open source fans, and better yet – for Mac Fans like me, who run Keynote – which (and I’m being honest here) I never knew could read pps formats!

Cold Weather Means Hearty Food!

Work is great as always, and there’s plenty of work around to be done, and enjoy. This cooler weather we’re experiencing also means that we’re more inclined to sit at our desks, instead of heading out to the pool! The only temptation of course, with cooler weather, is the desire to increase snacking. Hot coffee equals a desire for biscuits and rusks, and cake, and all those naughty things. Yesterday, the desire for a doughnut was so overwhelming that I broke a 10 month “no doughnut” streak that I’d had going!

So, if you’re a WAHM, like me, then try hard to either lock the fridge,  pop some appetite suppressants or just say no to snacking with hot drinks. You could always have a quick hot chocolate or cocoa to suppress the sweet cravings, but then don’t go balistic and have three cups!

Here’s hoping you’re all well and working.

8 Things to Remember When Starting An Advertising Design Business

There are so many things to think about when you start your own business. Things that we fail to think about, unless due planning and research is done before we even get started.

For example, let’s say you start a  business (hey – I’m writing about what I know, just like my High School English Teacher taught me!).

4 Obvious things to remember would be:

1.  Computer

No matter which way you try to swing it, OF COURSE you’re going to need a computer, this one is a no brainer.

2.  Printer

Again, a no brainer – but this time it gets more complicated, have you considered print quality, ability of printer to handle different stocks, size format allocations, and volume? Suddenly that little desktop inkjet doesn’t quite cut it.

3.  Tablet

No, I’m not talking about stress pills here! But if you’re fresh out of advertising design school, then chances are you’ve been using the schools equipment, and you need to remember that you’re going to be a fish out of water without one.

You could start with something small like a Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet, but if you’re taking yourself seriously as an advertising and graphic designer, then go for one that has a minimum 6×8 ” work space. You will not regret it.

4.  Belief in Yourself

Naturally if you’re going it alone, then you have enough self belief to make a go of it. If you’re not a confident person, it will show, and you’re going to scare clients away by not coming across as somebody who can get the job done.

4 Not So Obvious Things to Remember

1.  Clients!

Yes you need clients, even if you’re brilliant, and have won countless awards if you do not have clients who love you enough to be confident that ‘leaving’ with you from your current place of work will improve their business, then you need to rethink things, or go after a different market. Or have a spouse who supports you, but I recommend a dedicated client base first!

2.  Internet Connection

You would not believe how many times I hear people shocked at the price of broadband plans. Advertising designers and graphic designers need constant, big bandwidth capabilities to handle large file transfers that continually flow back and forth as work progresses. Your quick, cheap R49 a month 50mb plan won’t even cover one day’s email if you have just one project.  If you’ve been at a thriving studio, the cost can be surprising once it comes out of your own pocket.

3.  Insurance

Do NOT neglect to take out business insurance to cover your equipment, and other items. Just imagine you’re going back and forth from printer to client with samples and heaven forbid the final shipment of ’stuff’ when it gets stolen by some idiot out of the back seat of your car. Who is going to pay for a reprint of 2000 letterheads for corporation X?  You may even need to get high risk auto insurance if you’re using your car for business.

4.  Space

Sure everyone sits at a stressful job in a cubicle at some point in their lives, and envisions a brighter future where they’re working from home in a plush surroundings, achieving their dreams. That *can* happen, but only with careful planning and consideration.  You need to consider, particularly if you’re a mom – how the kids will be entertained while you work. Where will your clients proofs and samples be safe from sticky hands? How much extra space can your household afford?

Lastly, if starting your own advertising design business is an all consuming passion, be sure to research, plan, and strategise carefully, it can make all the difference between success and failure. But ultimately, go for it.

One of My Favourite Industry Sectors

Fashion.

No, not like everyone else, because I’m talking about Equestrian Fashion!

There is something so delightful, about equestrian fashion. Whether you’re a dressage rider, up on a giant warmblood, with your perfect topper, tailcoat, impossibly white gloves and leather full seat breeches, or if you’re a western trail rider, or happy hacker, there is a multitude of equestrian specific fashion out there.

One of my favourite brands is Ariat, Tuff Rider and Mountain Horse, they are such great quality products and so so cute/awesome and functional! Not to mention sturdy and hard wearing, because anyone who’s been around horses will tell you that if you wear it around horses, it will get dropped in the mud (or you will get dumped in the mud) rained on, slobbered on, with sweet horsey green grass slimey slobber (horsey kisses!), bitten, snagged on errant nails in fence posts, and generally face a lot more action than normal clothing. So it has to be good!

I love shopping for equestrian stuff, from funky hats to wear around the stables, to safety helmets worn whilst out riding. What are your favourite equestrian brands?
